Since 1966
At Big Jim’s, our valuable employees, our commitment to our customers and community, and our dedication to quality food is what has made us a local landmark for over 50 years with “Hamburgers made with Love” for our customers and friends since 1966.
1950:
The Beginning
It all started in 1950 when Sam Yoder opened the “Dutch Treat” drive-in. In 1956, Tom Foley took over and renamed it the “Irish Treat,” running the drive-in until 1962, when it closed due to the construction of the new I-84 highway.
1966:
Big Jim’s Is Born
In 1966, Jim Dahlen, along with partner Ted Beckley, reopened the drive-in under the now-famous name “Big Jim’s Drive-In.” It quickly became a local favorite, known for its delicious food and welcoming atmosphere.
1968:
A New Chapter
By 1968, Ted Beckley became the sole owner after buying out Jim’s share of the business. Ted continued to run Big Jim’s successfully until 1988, when he built a new building. The old Big Jim’s was demolished and is now part of our current parking lot. After building the new restaurant, Ted and his wife Lynda ran it for another 8 years.
1997:
The Next Generation
In 1997, Big Jim’s was sold to Rex and Beth Tegen. The Tegens carried on the legacy, operating the restaurant successfully for over 20 years, always upholding the same values of quality food and great customer service.
2017:
A New Era
After 20 successful years, the Tegens retired and sold Big Jim’s to current owners Derek DeBorde and Jason Taylor, both Hood River natives. Under their ownership, Big Jim’s continues to serve fresh, made-to-order hamburgers with the same core values that have always guided us—our employees, our customers, our community, and quality food. We are proud to continue serving you!
2025:
Growing the Legacy
After over 55 years in The Dalles, Big Jim’s is expanding to Hood River! We’re excited to announce the opening of Big Jim’s Hood River in late February 2025, bringing our delicious burgers and family-friendly atmosphere to a new community.
